When and Why You Should Replace Your Sports Socks

When and Why You Should Replace Your Sports Socks

February 26, 2019

We tend to spend a lot of money on sports sneakers, equipment, and athletic apparel, tracking their usage and replacing them once signs of wear and tear develop. Replacing tennis, basketball and running shoes should be done after 300-600 miles of usage (approximately every 3 - 6 months).

What About Socks?

Unfortunately, we do not replace our sport socks as often as we should. Sports socks deteriorate over time due to loss of threading and structure which negatively impact their performance.  Although they are made from durable cottons, and are designed to provide extra support and cushioning to key areas of the foot, they still need to be replaced every 3 - 6 months.

Key signs that alert you to replace our socks:

Thin Spots/Holes

  • Thin spots and holes can result in blistering of the feet. The benefits of periodically replacing these socks outweigh the cost and the pain associated with blisters.
Stretching/Loss of Form
  • Stretched and misshaped socks can lead to blister formation from the socks’ bunching up inside the shoe.  Stretched socks do not provide any ankle or arch support that is required during every day and athletic  activities. This lack of support can lead to severe ankle injuries.
Hot Spots
  • Hot spots, the precursors to blisters, are caused by sock overwear and breakdown of the socks’ structure.
Foot Care
  • Monitor the condition of your socks. When  visibly worn, or when the feet begin to experience discomfort, the socks should be replaced. The benefits of replacing the socks far outweigh the cost of rehabilitating damaged feet.

Quick tip - Using a tumble dryer can speed up the breakdown of the socks’ fibers which cause stretching and subsequent loss of socks’ performance.
